Family & Relationships

Day: 3

Scripture

Genesis 2:18

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Main Idea

As we look at this new year, it’s important for us to have God’s heart for each of our relationships. In Genesis 2:18 (NIV), God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” We are never at our best when we’re isolated. God intended for us to be in a relationship. That word suitable means “mutually beneficial for both parties.” Contextually, God was referring to the marriage relationship between a man and a woman. But the same level of care is applicable to all of our relationships. We need to be in the right relationship with others. We must be wise in choosing who we do life with and how we live it. And you know, sometimes it’s hard to be in a relationship. Sometimes we don’t get to choose, such as who our parents are. Sometimes we do have a choice, like who we marry. But no matter the type of relationship, we are responsible for how we steward them. In fact, we need to take an honest inventory of our relationships.

We must be wise in choosing who we do life with and how we live it.

Application

Are there any relationships that are unhealthy? Do I have any toxic relationships that need to be severed? Am I taking my closest relationships for granted and not investing into them? Do I have any relationships that I can encourage and pour into?

Prayer

God, thank You for designing us to live in community with one another. We recognize how mundane life would be if we didn’t have others living it out with us. But we also realize that relationships can be tough. So, we ask You to give us the wisdom, humility, strength, and love we need to have healthy, life-giving marriages, families, and friends. Give us the courage to even have difficult conversations when necessary. We want others to see You in the way that we steward our relationships. Amen!
