Unity
Day: 11
Scripture
Psalm 133:1
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
Main Idea
In Psalm 133:1, the psalmist proclaims, "How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” These words resonate with a divine truth: unity is not only good, but it is a source of blessing and pleasure in the eyes of God. The new year is an opportunity to reflect on the relationships that matter—in our families, workplaces, communities, and beyond. Ephesians 4:3 encourages us to "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." The truth is, sometimes it is an effort or even a challenge to keep unity. If we can be not just peace keepers but peace makers and actually make a conscious effort to bring God’s peace into our relationships there is a blessing that follows. Unity is not merely the absence of conflict but the intentional pursuit of harmony and peace. God’s word is clear that, where there is unity God commands a blessing. Sometimes we allow “silly stuff” to come between us. We focus on the little differences of opinion, we get offended and distracted on the minor issues rather than remaining unified over big, bold and important truths. As followers of Christ, unity is our calling card. It should be what shows this world that we are children of God. Romans 12:16 says, “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.” Let’s pray for this kind of harmony and unity that not only reflects the character of our God but also testifies to the world of His love.
As followers of Christ, unity is our calling card. It should be what shows this world that we are children of God.
Application
Why is it so important for believers to live in Christian unity? What is the relationship between a shared faith and a shared mission? How do these two things contribute to unity among believers?
Prayer
Father, may this year be marked by a great sense of unity. We thank you for harmony, humility and peace in our relationships. Teach us how to be peacemakers, to promote oneness. Help us to let go of the “silly stuff”, the offense, the disagreements, and help us to truly embrace your love and unity in all of our relationships and endeavors. We thank you that where there is unity, you command a blessing. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
